Creative Reflections

This month's hostess with the mostest for the Self-Discovery Word by Word Blogger Series is the incredibly insightful Margarita Tartakovsky. If you don't already read her blog, Weightless, get your tail over there right now. It's an amazing haven from the insanity of our diet-obsessed culture. You'll get major inspiration and education on how to love your body and break free from the number on the scale. Her blog has become one of my absolute favorites.

Margarita has selected "creativity" as our word to explore this month. Here is my contribution:

Of course. I wrote a blog post this morning (not yet up), in the dark hours of the pre-dawn about journalling and feeling (or not feeling) artistic. This confirms what I wrote.

    Thank you.

  3. Fantastic video, Joy. Leave it to you to reflect on this word so “creatively!“

I love this post. It sort of feels like an appropriately timed reminder (big surprise since you’re always sort of in my head anyway). ;-)

I have, and let’s be honest, still do, tell myself how not creative I am. I do see it as sort of ridiculous, but that said, it’s one of those long standing stories that just seems to linger. “Not creative” is so deeply fear based. So. So. Deep.

I love your description of how creativity is a part of everything, even all the seemingly mundane things. It makes taking ownership of “being creative” a little easier to think about. I’m all about the turtle steps.

And can I just say how much I LOVE what you said about “making art out of the years we have on this earth” and being the “artist of your own life”! Dang, that’s pure poetry!

  5. avatar Jean Sampson says:

This is so right on, Joy. There is vo such thing as a non-creative person, and that is the truth!

  6. Joy, wow, talk about tons of great inspiration here! Such a beautiful and thoughtful video!

I love what you said about becoming the artists of our lives. Life without creativity and imagination is bland. Such an important point!

But creating is magical. To me, it’s an open door to so many possibilities, and it’s also living your life with curiosity and wonder — all, of course, very positive and exciting things.

Thank you soooo much for participating in the series. I always look forward to your reflections. :) You always surprise me.

Oh, and I can’t tell you how happy your words about Weightless (and me…hehe) made me! I appreciate your support so much. It’s really an honor.

    And, p.s., you’re simply fabulous! :)

      YES! Creating is magical! TOTALLY!

Thank you so much for your sweet comments. (And it’s my pleasure to support you. You are doing SUCH good things in this world.)

  7. My husband and I were JUST having this conversation…he, a brilliant engineer, who has designed and built, from scratch:

a wonderful enclosure for our cats so they can go outside safely, via a cat door in my office

    AND

a motorcycle garage, built on a slightly sloping sidewalk next to our garage

doesn’t see himself as creative. I’m sending him this video!!

  9. Joy, thank you for another beautiful, uplifting video. I think the message that, we are the creators of the struggles in our lives, and thus, we can also use our imaginations to choose differently — to create joyful life experiences — is so, so important. It can’t be said enough… and you said it perfectly :)

  11. Love this! I’ve also had to reimagine what creativity means (I can’t cut a straight line to save my life!), and I love how you describe that process. It is so joyful and expansive.

    • avatar Joy Tanksley says:

Hey Anna! Thanks for this sweet comment. And oh… the cutting thing. We are truly kindred spirits. My preschool teacher gave me an unsatisfactory mark in cutting and sent me home with a pair of scissors to practice. It scarred me for life! ;)

      • OMG. I don’t remember that happening to me in preschool, but that’s probably because I don’t have to dig that far back– it just happened to me last year! We were making buttons at work, and I was trying to be “helpful,” so I sat down for several hours and cut out about 200 of them. I was feeling really good about my scissor abilities–until my coworker told me that NONE of them could be used because they were too big and/or uneven. I said, “well, I guess cutting things out is not my gift!” Good thing I realized that, too, because my coworker simultaneously banned me from ever doing it again. :)

        Happy weekend!

Wow!! I Love that Joy :)
    Thank you!

  13. Thank you for this gift. I love how you state that creativity and imagination are a muscle. There are so many muscles that left unused wither. But, it’s our opportunity to flex these. Working on my mindfulness muscle…
    Blessings always!

Wow Joy, this video is awesome! I love all of your videos, they always put me in a great mood and I look forward to them every week!

I love how you say that we are the artists of our lives. I majored in art in college and I have been out of school for about 4 years now. I miss the day to day creativity that was instilled in my everyday life back then. Sometimes I get so wound up in working and doing what ‘what I have to do’ that I seldom just sit and be creative. You have reminded me that I CAN bring back that creativity in every aspect of my life. It really is apart of who I am and I need to have that back. That excites me and I thank you for reminding me.

  16. avatar elizabeth says:

creativity = imagination. yes! once you let go of the notion that you have to be an “Artist” in order to be creative, all of the magic possibilities rush in. It is a “little truth” that we all need to remember! stopping by as a fellow participant in the self-discovery series at Weightless.

  17. Joy, I loved this. Beomcing the artist on your own life. And the “joy journey” at the end, how fun. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.

  18. avatar Janet says:

Beautiful display of creativity. See, every time I experience a different “flexing” of someone’s creative muscles I’m reminded of my limited point of view.

Thank you so much for this magnificent vision. It inspires me to open up a little more the next time. Thank you!

I loved the association between creation and eating disorders. Never thought of it that way, but oh so true. I’m rethinking my own experience as I write this. We create, therefore we can un-create. I seem to get that in every other aspect of my life … hmmmm.

    Thanks, Joy.

    Cheers!

    Janet
