Protest Dance

Over the weekend, I read an incredible book: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. READ THIS BOOK. I'm serious. It is a 130-page powerhouse of truth telling that will feed your spirit and inspire you to shine your authenticity out to the world.

On Monday, Brene launched what she's calling a "Perfect Protest" on her blog Ordinary Courage (which I also highly recommend). Well, you guys know I'm a recovering perfectionist, and I'm all about protesting perfection, so OF COURSE I had to participate. This video is my contribution to the movement. Enjoy!

Thanks, Ami! It’s been really fun to dabble with the video stuff and learn the new technology. I LOVED making and editing videos in high school and college, but then just sort of dropped it. The technology now makes it so much easier now. It’s cool to come back to one of my old passions.

Awesome video!!!! I love it!!!!!!! I sometimes still worry/wonder what other people are or do think of me.…I’m trying to liberate myself from that hang-up though~

We have a plaque on our front door (which is an old $50 door that we got used that I stripped all, well almost all, of the paint from last fall — it’s cool looking and far from perfect) which says:
    Perfect without Perfection
Which is what you are and I am and my marriage is and my teaching is and my life is.
Thank you for lettin me be myself.

really, really loved your video–great choice of song and dancing can be so joyous if you let go of perfection and worrying about how you look to others.…you looked very happy and free.

Joy — you absolutely ROCKED the protest! Your video made me smile and made me want to “move it move it” myself. Keep being you and never worry about what anyone else thinks — you are perfectly imperfect! (came here from Brene’s blog).

Thanks, Kelley! It’s so funny that the video has ended up being such a gift to ME. Some of those confessions (like only brushing me teeth once per day) really felt a bit risky. My hubby brushes twice a day and I honestly thought that most “normal” people did, too. It’s so funny to find out that I have all these “sisters”! The things that we think are imperfections turn out to just be normal things. LOVE THAT.

  20. avatar Lee says:

Really awesome! Wart on foot — check! Brush once/day — check! Let’s see…waited until I was 45(!) to learn to dance via Zumba and Body Jam. And I’m not going to the fact that some parts keep moving after I’ve stopped — stop me! Thanks for sharing your lovely imperfect self with us!

    • avatar Joy Tanksley says:

Hey Lee! Thanks for commenting! I really love both Zumba and Body Jam… and then I discovered Nia. It’s totally become MY THING! Love it! Have you ever tried Nia?

      • avatar Lee says:

Squeal! I had never heard of Nia and just checked it out — what an amazing concept. I did TKD, then Karate and Aikido for years before switching to yoga. And then adding dance. I found a teacher in my area and will check it out next week. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before — and here I am going to TKD twice a week, yoga twice a week, and dance twice a week. My world is a rockin’. Thanks again!

PS. RE: your plantars wart…use the inside of a banana peel and bandage up over night for a few nights. Will fix it right up without the pain.

My imperfections? — Too many to name em all, but letting go of shovelling snow — it just melts anyway, worrying about my daughters’ bedrooms and whether they’re clean (well, most of the time), and clean kitchen counters.
