Over the weekend, I read an incredible book: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. READ THIS BOOK. I'm serious. It is a 130-page powerhouse of truth telling that will feed your spirit and inspire you to shine your authenticity out to the world.
On Monday, Brene launched what she's calling a "Perfect Protest" on her blog Ordinary Courage (which I also highly recommend). Well, you guys know I'm a recovering perfectionist, and I'm all about protesting perfection, so OF COURSE I had to participate. This video is my contribution to the movement. Enjoy!
Okay - your turn! I wanna here your admissions of imperfection in the comments!

You give me hope. Rock on sista.
xoxo
No, YOU rock on, sista!!!! I love your comment. It’s really a beautiful thing to be told that you’ve given someone hope. Beautiful. Thanks.
What everyone else said. AND — your videos are really evolving — awesome production, great soundtracks (and sound quality), great effects. You amaze me!

Thanks, Ami! It’s been really fun to dabble with the video stuff and learn the new technology. I LOVED making and editing videos in high school and college, but then just sort of dropped it. The technology now makes it so much easier now. It’s cool to come back to one of my old passions.
Awesome video!!!! I love it!!!!!!! I sometimes still worry/wonder what other people are or do think of me.…I’m trying to liberate myself from that hang-up though~

Thank you!
We have a plaque on our front door (which is an old $50 door that we got used that I stripped all, well almost all, of the paint from last fall — it’s cool looking and far from perfect) which says:
Perfect without Perfection
Which is what you are and I am and my marriage is and my teaching is and my life is.
Thank you for lettin me be myself.
xo
Susan
Oh, I love that! Your plaque makes me think of a fabulous mantra that was shared with me recently: “I’m okay with being merely excellent.”
you’ve completely made my day.
I just wanted to hug you after.
absolutely wonderfully life affirming perfection of the imperfect.
Oh, I would LOVE a hug! (I’m a total hugger.)Thank you for this sweet comment. Have a great weekend!
Well done Joy!! Such an inspiration! My heart and belly were stirred with my own vitality and freedom! Thank you!!!
“My heart and belly were stirred with my own vitality and freedom!” Mmmmmmm.… what a lovely sentence. Thank you so much for sharing that. And you are very, very welcome!
No. No, wait. Those dance moves…your dance moves were FANTABULOUS! Now I wanna be up in the club with you. This video was great. Simply great. Also? Your smile is crazy contagious. Watch were you flash that thing, woman.

Oh, Ms. Mary Mack, I LIKE you! And those weren’t even my best moves.
really, really loved your video–great choice of song and dancing can be so joyous if you let go of perfection and worrying about how you look to others.…you looked very happy and free.
Thanks, Kathy!
I can’t tell you how much I needed your positive energy tonite! No need to share my negative energies going on. You rock!
YEAH! I’m so glad I help bring the feel-good vibe to your Sunday evening! XO!
Joy — you absolutely ROCKED the protest! Your video made me smile and made me want to “move it move it” myself. Keep being you and never worry about what anyone else thinks — you are perfectly imperfect! (came here from Brene’s blog).

Hey Cheri! Thanks so much for coming over and making this lovely comment! Much love to you!
Oh Joy!! I think we must be sisters!!! I only brush once a day too — even though I lie to my dental hygienist about it EVERY time I visit (you think she can tell?). Bless you — your dance video made my day. Thank you so much for your courage!!
blessings,
Kelley
Kelley´s last [type] ..Happy Friday– Time Capsule
Thanks, Kelley! It’s so funny that the video has ended up being such a gift to ME. Some of those confessions (like only brushing me teeth once per day) really felt a bit risky. My hubby brushes twice a day and I honestly thought that most “normal” people did, too. It’s so funny to find out that I have all these “sisters”! The things that we think are imperfections turn out to just be normal things. LOVE THAT.
that was fabulous. thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! And thanks for commenting!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video!!1 Thank You SOOOOOOOO much for this!!1

Yeah! You’re dancing with me! LOVE THAT!
Fantastic! What a wonderful video.. You have inspired me.
Thanks, Nikki. What an honor it is to think I’ve provided inspiration for you. Much love!
You totally made me laugh, in a very good way. I also have a rotten cucumber, only brush my teeth once a day, and I care waaaaaaay too much about what people think.
YEAH! So glad to hear I have another partner in awesome imperfections!
Really awesome! Wart on foot — check! Brush once/day — check! Let’s see…waited until I was 45(!) to learn to dance via Zumba and Body Jam. And I’m not going to the fact that some parts keep moving after I’ve stopped — stop me! Thanks for sharing your lovely imperfect self with us!
Hey Lee! Thanks for commenting! I really love both Zumba and Body Jam… and then I discovered Nia. It’s totally become MY THING! Love it! Have you ever tried Nia?
Squeal! I had never heard of Nia and just checked it out — what an amazing concept. I did TKD, then Karate and Aikido for years before switching to yoga. And then adding dance. I found a teacher in my area and will check it out next week. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before — and here I am going to TKD twice a week, yoga twice a week, and dance twice a week. My world is a rockin’. Thanks again!
YEAH! You’re welcome!
Joy, great name, great moves! Inspirational! I’m gonna spread the word about this movement! I love it!
You are awesome!
PS. RE: your plantars wart…use the inside of a banana peel and bandage up over night for a few nights. Will fix it right up without the pain.
Cheers!
Thanks, baby, for the kind comments and potential wart cure! I’ll try it!
Joy, thanks for inspire such JOY with your video, your smile is beautiful and contagious.
Aw! Thank you!
THIS WAS BLOODY BRILLIANT — I think we could be friends!
Ha ha! Thanks! Well, let’s be friends, then, honey!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video– one of my favorite songs and you have given me some new moves to work on!!!
Thank you for sharing this, it made my heart smile. I do brush twice daily, but that cucumber thing? totally got that goin’ on.

What a great way to start the day — I so enjoyed your dance! I also care too much about what others think. It’s something I’ve been working on — which is how I found Brene’s blog & then yours. (I think I’ll have to play it again & dance along.
)
Yeah! Yes — play it again and dance with me, baby!

This is so fantastic! You so rock, Joy. BTW, the moment you did that move where you do one pump to the right with both arms, then the left then two forward thrusts (does it have a name???), I became your #1 fan
Ha ha ha! Thanks, Wendy! So, you recognized that move, huh? No, that move doesn’t have a name that I know of, but it totally should. I mean, it’s a CLASSIC.
Oh you rock! That’s an awesome video!

I follow another blog who had a link to Brene Brown. When I read her blog she had a link to this post. AWESOME. I had never heard of any of this Perfection Protest and your video is just great. I am now following your blog as well as Brene’s and if it is okay with you I would like to put a link on my next post to your blog and this great video. I have been looking through your other posts and i just love your blog. Well Done. Cheers, Wendy

I have watched your perfection protest every morning since October 1st. It has helped me set the right tone for the day ahead. About every second or third day, I think of someone else who would enjoy it, and I forward it to her. You totally rock, Joy.

LOVE the dancing and the energy. Thanks for sharing. Totally inspires me to start an Imperfection Movement.
My imperfections? — Too many to name em all, but letting go of shovelling snow — it just melts anyway, worrying about my daughters’ bedrooms and whether they’re clean (well, most of the time), and clean kitchen counters.

You’re video kicks ass! Keep up the good work!
Hahaha! Thanks!
Oops, spelled ‘your’ wrong. Damn it. I’m working on not caring so much about what other people think.
Ah, I love it. How PERFECT is that? A wonderful opportunity to practice, eh?

Aw! Thanks! What a lovely comment!
Awesome video. Great show of courage making and posting this! One of my imperfections: sometimes I’m jealous and insecure in relationships even though I don’t want to be.
Thank you, Misty! And thank you especially for sharing your own confession. Yep — you’re not alone on the relationship insecurity thing. I’m with you.
