Charlie and I spent the last few days in Clemson, South Carolina, looking for a place to live. The moving process is proving to be a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our priorities. We're having ample chances to explore what really matters most to us. Here are some questions for all of us to chew on.
- Is your happiness location independent? Why or why not?
- What do you want your day-to-day life to feel like? How is that different from what it looks like?
- What material possessions do you believe you have to have in order to live your best life?
- Does the stuff you own bring you a sense of freedom or does it make you feel trapped?
- How attached are you to the things you own? What if you had to let go of some key possessions? Could you do it? How would it feel to let go?
- Do you believe there are kindred spirits everywhere? That people are pretty much the same wherever you go? What criteria do you have for your relationships? Is that criteria based in love or fear?
- Which of your current relationships do you know, for certain, will stand the test of time? Which ones do you know for certain can thrive in spite of physical distance? What is it about those relationships that sets them apart from others?
- If someone watched you live your normal lifestyle for a week, what would they say matters most to you based on how you spend your time? Is that what really matters most to you?

Wow. Thanks, Joy. These are great questions for all of us! The last one really made me sit up and think …
Ooooh! I made you think! Excellent!
As an older woman who lives in the house where I was born and raised, passing my Grandmother and Grandfather’s house on the way to my studio in the art center which is in the building where I went to elementary school, yes, unfortunately, I AM place dependent. I lived with my husband, who I went to high school with, for 30 years in a cottage next to my parents who were older when they had me. We looked after my Dad for most of those 30 years, so we stayed right where we were and loved it. I really do love my rootedness and the fact that the trees that are growing now were some of the trees I spent my childhood with. It makes me happy to be able to stay in my tiny little house.
Hey Jean! That’s so cool that you have this sense of rootedness and connection to your family’s history. I don’t believe for one minute, though, that your happiness is location dependent. You have too much joy in your heart to be bound by a place! Have you met yourself?
That doesn’t mean you want to move, or need to move. Just means that if you HAD to, I know you would bring your joy with you.
XXOO!
I love my house and I don’t think I could move. It’s full of memories of raising my kids. I think it would make me sad to move. But if I had to move– Clemson would be at the top of my list! I met my husband at Clemson and we have lots of great memories there. The countryside and the campus are so beautiful. Go Tigers!!
Vivian — this is very encouraging to hear! Thanks for reading and commenting.
Hi Joy! These are some great questions to ask when considering a move! I wish you great success on your move. Take care and have a wonderful day!

Hey Valerie! Glad these resonated with you in some way. Have fun exploring and discovering!
Wow, Joy — I really like all these questions. I think I might actually write my answers as a blog post because they’ve inspired me so much.
Especially “is your happiness location dependent”? It totally used to be, but I think I can proudly say that it’s not.
xoxo
Oooh! It would be so cool to see your answers in a blog post!
Love to you!

I loved this one, Joy. Apparently I’m supposed to be thinking about home and “stuff” because this is the third post I’ve read on it! :
“If someone watched you live your normal lifestyle for a week, what would they say matters most to you based on how you spend your time? Is that what really matters most to you?” What a great question.
It actually made me feel pretty good–I think I’m mostly on the right track. Yea!
Hey Amy! Glad you liked this post, and it’s very cool that your answers are affirming that you’re on the right track. Excellent!
