Gratitude Giveaway

I have had the pleasure of experiencing an abundance of gratitude over the past several days. Last Wednesday, my husband accepted a wonderful job offer that has been a long time coming. Dr. Tanksley will teach philosophy at Clemson University this fall.

Not only am I thankful for the job itself, but I am thankful for the path that has lead us to this job. I am thankful for the friends and family who supported us when job prospects looked grim. I am thankful for the gentle (and not so gentle) reminders that things always work out someway, somehow. I am thankful for my husband's patience and perseverance. I am thankful things didn't work out the way I originally wanted because it gave me time to learn and grow and deepen relationships and take an exciting leap into my own dream career.

What are you thankful for today? Share at least three things you are grateful for in the comments and you'll be entered to win the lovely gratitude journal pictured with this post! To be entered to win, make your comment by 4 pm on Thursday. I'll announce the winner Friday morning. Good luck!

And one more thing - Charlie and I are moving in one month! We have so much to do in the coming weeks. To help me manage the chaos, I am switching to a Monday, Wednesday, Friday posting schedule here at Being Joy.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I am very thankful for YOU!

I am thankful for a healthy, amazing, resilient body that is always on my side, even after all the years of all the angry thoughts, words, actions I have put upon it.

I am thankful for my truly gracious family who loves me, supports me and forgives me regularly, even when I’m short, “non-judgmentally” judging and seemingly thrashing about while in the next ‘becoming’ stage.

I am thankful for you Joy. For being this huge bright light in my life at a time when I deeply needed it. I am thankful for your kindred spirit, laughter, sincerity and for showing me what real friendship can feel like.

Man I’m going to miss you.
    (and Charlie too!)

Oh, and I am thankful that new generations of young people out there will have the good fortune to have their minds molded by Dr. Tanksley.

I think i“m disqualified, since I won the last contest, but I“ll definitely give it a go anyway!

I’m grateful for my husband and children — spending a week working evening watch always reminds me what a wonderful part of my life they are and how much I miss them. I can’t imagine my life without them. Alex turned four yesterday!

I’m thankful for a rewarding job that allows me serve the people around me. It can be difficult, frustrating, and emotionally draining, but having a victim hug me out on a crime scene spontaneously hug me the other night because nobody had ever actually helped her before reminded me why I do what I do.

I’m thankful for our amazing home. Every time I pull into my quarter-mile long driveway and am able to drive in and leave the world behind, I marvel at our blessings. I look at my garden, and my beautiful flowers, and all our animals and I can scarcely contain my joy.

It’s good to stop and think about the gifts in our lives!

P.S. Speaking of gifts, I got the summer CD a couple days ago, and I popped it in my CD player on the way to work. Love it! Thank you. :-)

We use ‘thankful’ and ‘grateful’ interchangeably, but I see them as two different words. If I am thankful for something, it may not be something I really want, but I see it as something I need. If I am grateful, I am very happy to receive this gift–perhaps I did not *need* it, but wanted it, or perhaps it was both needed and wanted. One of the synonyms of grateful is ‘agreeable’. There are many things I admit thanks for that are not agreeable with me.

I just returned from a visit with my father and his wife in their home in NC. After this past week, I can say I am very grateful for my home, which is completely accessible to me—inside and out, (except for the tool closet, which is another story entirely). I have long clung to the principle that I can be as independent as my surroundings allow, and my home makes me feel very capable.

Although I will dearly, dearly miss my colleague and close friend, I am grateful for the opportunity to expand 75 young minds yearly, and to encourage and enhance their outlets to read and write.

And finally, after going ‘home’ and being reminded of the seemingly senseless murder of my young cousin twenty years ago, I am thankful for the chance to age. Please notice the verbiage here. I am simply NOT grateful for this body, which denied me my youth and is not aging gracefully (work needed here, I know), but I am appreciative of the chance to grow old—to live my life fully and in full.

    Love you, Joy.

Well, narrowing it down to only 3 things will be a challenge but here goes:

I am grateful for the wisdom and perspective I have gleaned by living to the age of 63. It really helps me to know that I will be ok, no matter what and that I can count on a path to open when one is blocked. I might not like change, but I can adjust and be flexible if I have to. And we ALL have to!

I am grateful for my hubby and all my delightful and loving friends who enrich my life with joy and laughter (you are one of those, Joy, even though we didn’t get a lot of time together there is a big “JOY” connection.)

I am grateful for my creative, child-like mind that is a virtual playground of words for images and poems (and funny stuff) and a circus of colors, shapes, images for painting and creating art.

Well, there is SO much more but I will stop there —–for now!
We will miss you but thank goodness for your Blog and Facebook page! Love you!

I’m grateful for each new day that I’m living and breathing. The body may not feel great but it’s all I’ve got and I’m learning to honor it and listen to what it has to say to me so I can try to feel better both physically and emotionally.

I grateful for my husband and my family that is now just my cousins, and my good friends and my dog. We all need a good support system and these people are mine. It may not always have felt that way (family) but I realize that they meant well and did their best.

And I am grateful for the chance to have met you Joy and have had you in my life even for a short time. You are showing me the way to love myself and take care of myself. You are a blessing to me right now and I am so happy that yours and Charlie’s dreams are coming true. C’ville will miss you but you are only and email, phone call away.

  9. avatar Susan says:

I am thankful for my strong healthy body that allows me so much pleasure and joy every day.

I am thankful for doing work that I love that inspires me and, I hope, inspires others.

I am thankful for the wonderful people in my life: my husband, step kids, friends, students, colleagues and cats (I do believe that cats are souls on vacation).

I am so thankful for my life. (oops that’s 4, hope that doesn’t disqualify me!)

  10. I am most thankful for my faith, my God, @nd, I am so very thankful for my wonderful husband who is my best friend and my soul mate. Lastly, I am thankful for my family and my friends„(is that 2 things?!) I am so thankful for so many more things but since I could only do three, I stopped.

  11. avatar Joy Tanksley says:

You guys are crackin’ me up with your self-imposed rules! I believe my post clearly reads “AT LEAST three things”! So let it gush if you need to!

  12. avatar Claudia says:

Nice to meet you — like your blog a lot — female color — nice words :=)
I’m thankful for my bikeride to work this morning and for lots of flowers in our garden.
And I’m thankful to read about how things work out well — cause that gives hope
    Thanks!
    Claudia

  13. Short and sweet (because I’m typing this on an iPod — LOL), I’m grateful for:

    1. Daily opportunities to learn more about myself and my interconnectedness to others.

    2. Love in all it’s forms.

    3. Being present in this moment.

I am thankful for so many things. I am especially, thankful, though, for a newfound ability and peace that is letting me be truly thankful for these things after just a few short weeks of a journey to look inside myself, instead of at myself, under your guidance. I am grateful for knowing the difference between physical and spiritual hunger. I am grateful for my husband, who is my biggest supporter. I am grateful for my friends and family and all of the kindnesses they extend along the way. I am grateful that every day and every moment gives us a new opportunity if we just happened to “get it wrong” before.
